Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races sits at 750 Hollywood Drive in Charles Town, in the eastern panhandle, and combines a full casino with a working thoroughbred track. It is operated by Penn Entertainment and is the closest West Virginia casino to the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore metro areas, which is why a large share of its weekend crowd arrives on I-70, I-270 and US-340 from Maryland, Virginia and D.C.

It is the biggest gaming floor in the state by most listings, and it behaves like one: busy on Friday and Saturday nights, calmer midweek, and always a mix of racing regulars, slot players and groups out for a show. The honest summary is a large, well-stocked, somewhat dated casino with a lot to do, held back by heavy smoke and tired decor in places. Minimum age on the casino floor is 21, and staff check ID at the entrance and again for cards, so bring a government-issued photo ID.

Setting expectations

Think regional racino, not Vegas resort. The building is a sprawl of garages, gaming areas, a racetrack grandstand and an event center, and you will walk more than you expect. Recent visitor write-ups are consistent on two complaints: smoke is noticeable across the floor, sportsbook and tables, including areas marked as non-smoking, and some areas feel dim or worn. On the plus side, the property is large enough that you can almost always find a game at your stakes, and the dining list is long for a regional casino.

What's on the floor

Slots. Listings put the machine count somewhere between roughly 1,700 and just over 1,900, and the number you actually see on a given night depends on what is in service. Expect reel and video slots, penny games, progressives, a high-limit area, plus video poker (Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker and similar) and keno. Slots earn rewards points faster than table play.

Tables. Third-party listings cite around 70 tables at full build, though not all run at once. Games include blackjack, craps, roulette, mini-baccarat, Spanish 21, Three Card and Four Card Poker, Pai Gow Poker, Let It Ride, Mississippi Stud and Heads Up Hold'em. Table minimums commonly start around $15 on slower nights and climb to $25 or more when busy, so weekend players on a tight budget should arrive early or plan to play midweek.

Poker. There is a dedicated poker room off the main floor. Hours, game mix and tournament schedules change, so check the property's poker page or call ahead before driving out for a specific game.

Sports betting. The sportsbook is one of the property's better rooms: about 30 televisions, a three-sided LED display and a long viewing area, with seating that fills fast on NFL Sundays and major fight nights. Occasional free live music plays in the same space.

Racing. Live thoroughbred racing typically runs on select Wednesday-through-Saturday evenings with first post around 7 p.m., and the track simulcasts races from elsewhere year-round. The summer and fall stakes calendar, including the Charles Town Classic and the West Virginia Breeders Classics, is the busiest stretch. If you have never watched a race, the grandstand is an easy, low-cost way to spend an evening between sessions.

Dining

Dining is the strongest argument for staying on property. Listings name around eight outlets:

  • Final Cut Steakhouse is the high-end option and the one to book ahead on weekends.
  • Skyline Terrace is a buffet with views of the track.
  • 9 Dragons and Zen Noodle cover Chinese and broader Asian dishes at different price points.
  • Mercato serves Italian, and The Classic is American comfort food.
  • Draft House is the craft beer and pub fare stop, and Joe Dough handles bakery and dessert.

Hours and closures vary by day, so confirm before you plan a dinner around a specific restaurant.

Hotel and entertainment

The Inn at Charles Town is the on-property hotel, with around 153 rooms and suites, a free shuttle to the casino and track, and complimentary hot breakfast. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the track. There is no pool or spa, and the fitness center carries a small daily amenity fee. If you want a pool, you will need to look at off-property hotels in nearby Charles Town or Harpers Ferry.

The event center holds roughly 1,500 and hosts concerts, comedy and tribute acts, most of them restricted to guests 21 and older. Tickets are sold through the venue's normal ticketing channels.

Getting there & parking

From D.C. the drive is typically around an hour to an hour and twenty minutes depending on traffic, and from Baltimore it is a little longer. Friday evening traffic on the outbound routes can add real time, so leave earlier than you think. From the Winchester, Virginia and Hagerstown, Maryland areas it is a short drive.

Parking is free, with east and west garages, surface lots and accessible spaces near the entrances. Valet is available. On big race days and concert nights the nearest lots fill, so expect a walk.

Tips before you go

  • Join the rewards program at the desk before you play. Penn's PENN Play program tracks slots and table play, and new members often get a small starter credit. Terms change, so ask at the club.
  • Pick your hours. Midweek afternoons and early evenings have lower table minimums and fewer crowds. Friday and Saturday nights are lively but expensive.
  • Plan around the smoke. If it bothers you, spend more time in the sportsbook's edges, the dining outlets and the event center, and consider a quick break outside.
  • Set a budget and a time limit before you walk in. Decide what you can afford to lose, bring only that, and leave the card at home. The odds on a casino floor favor the house over time.
  • Check the racing calendar. Live race days and big stakes events change parking and crowd levels, and some days have no live card at all.
  • Bring ID. You must be 21 or older to enter the gaming floor, and ID is checked.

If you are driving in from Maryland or D.C. and staying overnight, the Inn's shuttle and breakfast make it an easy base. If you are only visiting for the day, the free parking and the range of food make it a lower-cost outing than a trip to a larger resort casino.
